Griffith Police Officers Honored With Awards

On Tuesday May 19th, the following officers were recognized by the Public Information Officers Association for their on-duty actions and career accomplishments:

Lifetime Achievement Award:
Detective Commander Matt Argadine will retire this year with 35 years of service to the Griffith Police Department. Built upon his character as a person, an officer, and an investigator, Commander Argadine has been a mentor to many. His skill as an investigator has served as the foundation of the our investigative unit and his storied 35 year law enforcement career serves as an inspiration to all who know him.

Lifesaving Award:
Tony Hemphill: On April 25, 2014, Officer Hemphill was assisting another officer on a traffic stop. During the course of the stop Officer Hemphill discovered that an occupant of the vehicle had overdosed on drugs and was absent of a pulse. Through trained instinct, Officer Hemphill administered CPR and the subject subsequently survived the incident.

Officer Recognition:
Detective Cpl. John Mowery and Patrolman Jason Jaques: On September 16, 2014, Corporal Mowery and Officer Jaques responded to an active armed robbery of a retail store in Griffith. Due to their immediate response the officers arrived at the scene of the robbery, while the offender was still inside the store. In an effort to ensure the safety of the victims inside the store, while simultaneously avoiding a potential elevated hostage situation, Corporal Mowery and Officer Jaques took tactful watch of the offender as he made his armed exit from the store and towards them. As the offender exited the store both officers successfully apprehended the suspect and recovered evidence that ultimately led to his successful conviction.

Officer Recognition:
Corporal Paul Sines and Patrolman Jason Gary: On April 12, 2014, Griffith Police Corporal Sines and Officer Gary were called to a third floor apartment in reference to a disturbance. After arriving and investigating the matter, the officers informed an involved party that he was under arrest. Upon hearing this statement the male ran to the apartment's balcony, made a suicidal statement, and hurled his body over the railing. Corporal Sines and Officer Gary immediately grabbed the subject, who continued to struggle with them as they held him in mid-air. Despite the suspects continued resistance, the officers pulled him back onto the balcony where he was safely taken into custody.

The Griffith Police Department is extremely proud of these officer and happy that they received this well deserved recognition.

Griffith Central Market Is HERE Griffith Central Market Is HERE

In the Spring of 2013 we opened the Market in Central Park. The idea was to bring a “farmer’s market” to the town. However, it didn’t take long before we realized that what was taking shape was far different than the ordinary “farmer’s market” and we quickly adjusted our creative thinking.

Griffith Central Market is a festival that begins each spring and winds it’s way through the summer. It’s a microcosm that celebrates everything that the Town of Griffith is. It’s great music, hand crafted wares, delicious foods, and locally brewed ale’s. Nestled under the old oak trees that stir a gentle breeze in the warm summer months, the Market sits along a winding path through the park.

The success of the Market has everything to do with quality vendors and the amazingly supportive citizenry of this great little town we call home. The townspeople love the Market and in turn the Market continues to evolve into a venue that embraces all the people of Griffith. It’s the place to be on Friday afternoon/evening.

The Market is scheduled to being on Friday May 1st weather permitting.

If you would like to get more information on the event via updates and have a Facebook account, please click HERE

Message from Griffith Police Dept and Griffith Crime Watch Message from Griffith Police Dept and Griffith Crime Watch

Graffiti is vandalism that scars our community, hurts property values, and diminishes our quality of life. To combat this crime and to maintain the beauty of our Town, the Town of Griffith offers free graffiti removal services to both public and private property owners.

To help us make this program a success, we ask that all of our residents and visitors to be on the look-out for any graffiti, on public or private property, and to report any observed instances to the Griffith Police Department at (219) 924-7503.

Once notified of the vandalism a police report will be generated and that report will be forwarded to the Griffith Parks Department.  After receiving the report, the Griffith Parks Department’s trained employees will immediately remove graffiti from public property but will need permission from property owners prior to doing any removal on private property.

The Griffith Police Department is dedicated to the apprehension of graffiti vandals and it should be noted that offenders, or parents of offenders, will be held liable for any monetary damages.

Words From The Bud Gaby Family

To the People of Griffith Indiana

The family of Glen Gaby, Jr would like to express their appreciation for the beautiful tribute given to our beloved Bud at his memorial service Friday April 10, 2015 in Griffith.

What a wonderful experience to know that Bud was so highly appreciated for his contributions to your community, even though he was not a native son.

The police honor guard at the casket; the large police escort; the signs at the city park stating RIP GLEN GABY and RIP BUD GABY; the Fire Dept trucks with ladders extended displaying Old Glory on the route to the cemetery were quite stirring emotionally and will never be forgotten by any of Bud’s surviving family members.

Thank you Griffith, we will always love you.

Glen Gaby Jr. Family
