Emergency Weather Information

The Town of Griffith has prepared for the dangerously low temperatures forecast over the next few days.  A temporary warming center will be available at the Griffith Central Fire Station located at 130 N Lafayette St near Town Hall and the Police Department.  Residents without access to a safe building may seek shelter at the fire station starting at 7:00pm on Tuesday, January 29th and until conditions subside. Town of Griffith employees will be on hand for assistance.  If residents are unable to provide their own transportation to the center, they are encouraged to call 219-924-7503 or 911. Residents who wish to utilize the warming center are encouraged to bring blankets, sleeping bags, pillows and other essentials, as well as snacks, medicines, and other items to hold them over during their time at the center.  In the event of any wide spread power outages, additional emergency shelters will be opened to accommodate those affected.

Citizens of Griffith are also encouraged to check on seniors or anyone else who may be more prone to suffer from the effects of these extreme conditions. Citizens can call 911 should they feel the need for police or fire personnel to check on the welfare of anyone at risk.

Please be aware that power outages should be reported to NIPSCO at 1-800-4NIPSCO (1-800-464-7726) or by texting “OUT” to 444111, and also know that neither police nor dispatch can advise of when power will be restored.

Griffith Town Hall will be open on Wednesday to receive calls for any town related weather issues.  Please call 219-924-7500 for assistance.

Also, Trash collection will be delayed one day this week and should occur on Friday.

Information regarding the services available during this extreme weather will be updated on the Griffith Police Facebook page, the Griffith Fire Facebook page and the Town of Griffith website

Please check the Griffith Fire Department Facebook page for cold weather tips and precautions.

Thank you.
