Real Estate/Property Taxes

Information on the portion of Real Estate/Property Taxes which fund Town of Griffith services

Various residents/home owners have asked for additional information about their real estate tax bills.

In general, most residents believe that ALL of their property/real estate taxes are paid to the Town of Griffith. That is not the case. In fact, about 20% of your real estate tax dollars fund Town of Griffith services. The remainder is used to pay for County, Calumet Township, Welfare, Lake County Library, Griffith schools, et al.

To illustrate exactly what is funded by property/real estate taxes, below are pie charts which are based on the last four real estate tax bills received by one of our Town officials (for a single family ranch house with a homestead extension and no mortgage exemption).

The dollar amount of YOUR real estate/property tax bill is based on the assessed valuation of your property. That valuation is reduced if you have filed for an exemption (such as a mortgage exemption, homestead exemption, etc.).

Real estate/property tax records are available online at the Lake County Assessor's Real Estate Information website. Go to the following website and login by clicking on the "Guest Access" button in the upper left corner of the webpage:
