Town of Griffith Golf Cart Permits

Individuals wishing to get a Town of Griffith Golf Cart Permit should contact the Griffith Police Department, between the hours of 0800 – 1600 hours, Monday through Friday, at 219-924-7503 Option #2 or #3, to request an appointment for a Golf Cart Inspection. 

Following is important information regarding Golf Cart Permits:

• After a request for a Golf Cart Inspection has been made, a Griffith VEST unit will then be advised of the request and will contact the requesting party to schedule an inspection.  
• The inspection will only be done to determine if the golf cart complies with Town of Griffith Ordinance No. 2021-26.  It is the responsibility of the owner to keep the golf cart in good working order and in compliance with Ordinance No. 2021-26 and state statute or be subject to all fines and penalties under the law. 
• The inspection will not test any mechanical components of the golf cart, such as brakes.  The Town is not equipped and is not testing for the general mechanical quality of the golf cart and accepts no liability for the maintenance or operation of a golf cart.
• Ordinance 2021-26 requires "Financial Responsibility," which means Liability Insurance coverage must be obtained in an amount not less than required by Indiana law for motor vehicles operated on public highways in the State of Indiana.    
• The Town of Griffith incurs administrative costs in providing materials for the registration, for approved stickers to be placed upon the golf carts, and for the initial inspection of the vehicle.  Therefore, there is an initial Administration/Inspection fee of fifty dollars ($50.00), and an annual renewal fee of thirty dollars ($30.00). 
• Initial registration tags will be issued by the Griffith Police Department after a satisfactory inspection of the golf cart has been completed.  Annual renewal registrations will not include an additional inspection. 
• Registration tags are good for the calendar year and expire on December 31^st annually. 
• Golf carts may be operated on Town of Griffith streets which have a posted speed limit of thirty (30) miles per hour or less.  Golf carts shall not be operated on Town sidewalks, upon any state highways or arterial roads located within the Town of Griffith, including Broad Street, Main Street, Cline Avenue, 45^th Avenue (Glen Park Avenue), Arbogast Street, Ridge Road, and Colfax Street.  However, golf carts may cross these streets in the crosswalk areas.
