A Career Path

As a new officer with the Griffith Police Department, you’ll start where all our officers begin—patrolling our community. This role offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in our community and build the trusting relationships that are essential to our success as a police department. After two years of service, you’ll be eligible to test for promotions and pursue one of the many special assignments available within our department.

Salary and Benefits:

Starting Salary: Based on experience

• 1-3 years of experience: $64,875.46
• 3+ years of experience: $71,991.92
• Certified First-Class Salary Rate: $90,591.92
• Additional Benefits: Paid overtime, specialty pay, and take-home vehicles

Longevity Pay in Addition to Base Salary: Starting on year 5 

• 5-9   years:    $1,025.04 per year 
• 10-14 years:    $2,049.96 per year 
• 15-19 years:    $3,075.00 per year 
• 20-23 years:    $4,100.04 per year 
• 24 years: $18,600.00 one time only 
• 25+ years:    $4,100.04 per year 

Example: a 5-year veteran makes base $71,991.92 + longevity $1,025.04 + uniform allowance $1,000.00 for approximately = $74,016.96 (not including OT pay and holiday pay).  In addition, nothing is deducted for PERF and minimal amounts for insurance. 

• Additional PERF contribution: The Town of Griffith covers 100% of contributions to the Police Officers' & Firefighters' Retirement Fund, with an option to participate in a tax-deferred 457B retirement plan.  Saving you $5,435.51!  
• Shift Differential:  $.35 afternoon or $.50 nights per hour  
• Annual Equipment Allowance: * $1,000 per year 

Top-Tier Health Insurance: $2.00 per paycheck! ($52 per year!) 

Vacation: Bring up to 3 weeks vacation with you. 

• One year of experience: 1 work week 
• Two years of experience: 2 work weeks 
• Five years of experience: 3 work weeks 

10 Paid Holidays: Paid at a rate of time and one half above your regular pay. 

Personal Time Off & Sick Time: 

• 12 sick days per year, bankable up to 120 days. 
• 3 personal days per year 
• Holiday compensation at time and a half to be used when schedule friendly.
